Alan Gene MacFarlane age 79 of Sweetwater, NJ, passed away at his home Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
Alan was born in Lakewood, NJ, to parents John and Elizabeth MacFarlane. He is predeceased by his parents and brothers John, Richard, and Douglas MacFarlane.
He served in the U.S. Army for 2 years where he saw a tour in the Vietnam War. Later he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves where he retired after 22 years. In 1995, Alan retired as Chief Ranger of Wharton State Forest after 23 years of service.
Alan had many interests and hobbies. An avid train enthusiast, he travelled much of the U.S. by rail. He was also very proud of the miles he put in on the Mississippi River by barge, eventually travelling the entirety of the river. He loved sharing a meal or drink with family and friends, never met a stranger, and always had a question to ask and a story to tell. Alan loved his home and the projects which kept him busy in retirement, especially his train grill.
Surviving are his two sons, Gene Alan MacFarlane and his wife Jennifer, and Lucas Eli MacFarlane and his wife Michelle, and his companion Kathy Minnick. He is also survived by the mother of his sons, Beverly MacFarlane. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Ethan, Autumn, Riley, Noel, Logan and Holly as well as his great-grandchild, Kendall.
