John Walter 'Jack' Vaughn

VAUGHN,
John (Jack) Walter, 94, Commander, USN (retired) passed away peacefully March 25th, 2016 at Martin Nursing & Restorative Care Center, Stuart. He was born in Hammonton, N.J. on January 16, 1922 to the late Wesley E. Vaughn and Alvina Rothfus Vaughn. He later after his military career taught elementary school in Hammonton, N.J. from 1968 - 1984. He served on the Hammonton Town Council and served on the Hammonton Lake Commission. His education included Hammonton High School, University of Richmond, University of Mississippi, BA and Glassboro State College, BA in Education. He has resided in Stuart for the past 25 years, and was a member of Peace Presbyterian Church, in Stuart. He was a member also of M.B. Taylor Masonic Lodge #141, Worshipful Master 32nd Degree as well as Theta Chi Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II, Korea and the Vietnam War. He served from September 4, 1942 till August 1, 1967. He served as an Airship Pilot, a Navigator on the U.S.S. Bennington, achieved the rank of Commander, and had been stationed at NAS Lakehurst, NAS Jacksonville, NAS Coronado, NAS Whiting Field, Elizabeth City, N.C., Glen View, IL., Quonset Point, R.I. and other assignments overseas. When Jack was 18 years old he saved two Hammonton youths who had broken through the ice on December 322,, 1939 and received the Carnegie Medal for heroism. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wesley E. Vaughn, II. Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Althea his 3 children, Charlotte M. Taraschke (Wilbur ) (Duke), Donna Artz (Alan), Deborah A. Vaughn Wright (Scott). Grandchildren, John A. Taraschke, Mary Jo Tarasche Spack, Michael Taraschke, Amy Taraschke Hulslander, Daniel Taraschke (deceased), Matthew Taraschke. Great Grandchildren, Wesley Bridges, Sarah Spack, Adam, Hannah,, Jacob, & Grace Taraschke. Nephew: Wesley E. Vaughn III (deceased) Grand Nephew, Wesley Vaughn, Grand Niece, Cindy Vaughn Dauria. Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation Saturday June 11, 2016 from 10:00am - 11:00am at the Hammonton Presbyterian Church 326 Bellevue Ave. Hammonton, NJ. Memorial service will be held at 11:00am. Memorial Contributions may be made to either, March of Dimes or The Wounded Warriors Project.
