John W. 'Jack' Olivo

John W. Olivo, 81, a lifelong resident of Hammonton, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday morning November 5, 2011. He was co-owner of Olivo's Thriftway Market and Italian Village which served the Hammonton community from 1935 to 1987. He was a 1948 graduate of Hammonton High School where he played Varsity baseball for 4 years, and in 2004, was inducted in the Hammonton High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a 1952 graduate of St. Joseph's College where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and was an outstanding 1st baseman for the St. Joseph's College baseball team. He was Chairman of the Hammonton Park Commission for several years, a member of the Batsto Citizens Committee, and the Hammonton Chamber of Commerce. He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for 8 years. He was a sports enthusiast with baseball being his favorite - a loyal Phillies fan and in his younger years, an exceptional bowler. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Buena Vista Country Club for over 20 years. He was a connoisseur of foreign and domestic stamps and coins. Being in the food business all his life, he knew good food and enjoyed dining out. He was a good man - a devoted husband, a loving father, and a faithful member of St. Joseph's and St. Martin's Roman Catholic Churches. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sylvia (nee Piason), his daughter Jeanne of NY, NY, and his sons John W. Jr. (Lynne) of San Diego, CA, and Jim of Margate, NJ. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, John W. III, Rachel, Matthew, and Kendall, many nieces and nephews, and is predeceased by his daughter-in-law Linda, parents Rocco and Camilla, brothers Frank and Joseph, and his sister Grace. Friends and relatives are invited to attend his viewing Wednesday November 9th from 6PM to 9PM at the Marinella Funeral Home, 102 North 3rd Street, Hammonton, NJ. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, November 10th at 10AM at St. Martin de Porres Church, South Egg Harbor Road, Hammonton, NJ.
