Jacqueline Alessi, 79, passed away on May 28th, 2019 at her home in Hammonton, NJ. Jacqueline was born in Harnett County, North Carolina, where her father Earsie Matthews and mother Mae Ferrell-Matthews were tenant farmers, raising tobacco. She drove a tractor at 9 years old, and learned to appreciate work; to be faithful to God's calling for us to selflessly serve others; to appreciate life and to never complain about life's challenges. Those values inspired her children John, Marian and Matthew to work hard, achieve success at work and each has been married over 20 years, blessed with loving spouses (Francette Kefover-Alessi, David Weiser and Angela Leonardo-Alessi, respectively). Jacqueline and her deceased husband John demonstrated love and hospitality to their 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and to neighbors and friends of their children throughout their entire marriage. Her husband John was the entertainer and often the cook, with a witty sense of humor. Jacqueline had the most wonderful laugh, was an amazing listener, and could ask you questions that showed that she understood you and appreciated you, no matter who you were and where you came from.
Jacqueline graduated from Buies Creek, North Carolina high school in 1957 and moved North to Camden, NJ when she was 18, helping her Aunt Maude Hughes raise her children Terry Hughes and Delores Hughes-Bishop. She worked for Snellenburg's Department Store in Philadelphia before having children and returned to work as a bookkeeper at some clothing factories in the Hammonton, NJ area, where John and Jacqueline settled in 1974. She later worked in the casinos in Atlantic City as a manager until approximately 2005. Somehow, she still found time to volunteer for Saint Joseph's High School, to go to her children's activities and to watch over her mother Annie Mae, mother-in-law Marion as well as her grandchildren Benjamin, Aaron, Daniel, Noah, Isabelle, Rachel, Samantha, Hannah, Matthew and Carlo.
Her work ethic and leadership skills both at home and at work were noble and inspiring. She loved her family very much, and her selfless love and thoughtfulness will be dearly missed by all of us. Some of the people who pre-deceased her were her older sister Glenda and her husband Thomas Moore. She is survived by her younger brother Gary and his wife Polly Matthews, two brothers-in-law (James and Michael Alessi), her nephews Tommy, Ronnie and Johnny Moore and a number of cousins including her cousins Delores and Billy Paul Bishop, who watched over Jacqueline while she has been in hospice the past few months.
Jacqueline appreciated her many friends in the Elm neighborhood off of Spring Road including the Gallaghers, Martinos, Quigleys, Montenegro/Lowdens, Carabins and Zitos. Finally, Jacqueline never forgot that she was born a Tarheel, and was grateful for the friendship that Anne Ferrell, Edna Ferrell, Peggy Matthews-Hedgepeth, Terry Ferrell, Geraldine Young, Larry Ferrell and many others who remained close with the North Carolinian who moved to New Jersey 62 years ago.
We welcome you to celebrate Jacqueline's life at Marinella Funeral Home, 102 N 3rd St, Hammonton, NJ 08037 on Monday, June 3. Visitation hours are from 12 to 2pm and a memorial service will take place at the funeral home at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, we suggest that donations be made to the Daniel J. Scocca Memorial Scholarship at St Joseph High School of Hammonton, NJ.
